01What is the difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and why does it matter?
The main difference is iron content. Ferrous metals (like steel, iron, and light gauge roofing) contain iron, are magnetic, and are usually recycled in large, heavy volumes. Non-ferrous metals (like copper, aluminum, brass, and stainless steel) do not contain iron, are non-magnetic, and are highly resistant to rust. Non-ferrous metals are much rarer and command significantly higher payout prices per kilogram than ferrous metal.
02How do I ensure my scrap gets maximum payout?
To maximize your profit, you should sort and clean your metals before bringing them to the yard. Group similar metals together (like separate copper from aluminum) so they are not graded as a cheaper mixed load. Second, remove attachments or contaminants wherever possible. This means stripping plastic insulation from copper wire, cutting brass fittings off copper pipes, and removing steel screws or rubber from aluminum window frames. Clean, pure metal always gets the premium daily rates, which are much lesser for unsorted, seemingly dirty scrap.
03Why can I not be paid in physical cash for my scrap?
Under Queensland law (the Second-hand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act), it is illegal for scrap metal dealers to pay with hand-to-hand cash for scrap metal. The legislation was a measure to bring more transparency and curb metal theft in the community. All good recycling businesses need to verify your identity with a photo ID (such as a driver license) and a payment will have to be made in a way that can be traced, like a secure funds transfer (EFT) or a bank transfer on the spot.
